Birdwatching / Ornithology

Keswick and its surrounding areas have a rich variety of birdlife. Bassenthwaite Lake Nature Reserve, for example, is home to hundreds of birds, including the first nesting Ospreys in England since the 1830s.

The Ospreys can be viewed from Dodd Wood, where staff from the Lake District Osprey Project (LDOP) partnership are available to help with telescopes every day during April to August. You can also view the nest cam on the LDOP website or at www.bbc.co.uk/cumbria.

As well as the osprey, over 70 different kinds of birds breed around the lake, including:
Redstarts, Redpolls, Oystercatchers, Red-breasted mergansers, Lapwings, Snipes, Goldeneyes, Teals and a variety of warblers.
