Wildlife

Britain’s rarest fish, the Vendace is only found in Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water.

As well as fish, there is a rich variety of bird life that makes Keswick and surrounding areas an ideal spot for ornithologists.

The combination of open water, woodland, swamp, fen and marshy grassland around Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater are a refuge for many rare plants, such as the globeflower, purple loosestrife and betony.
